Descripción
  • Diplomystus Dentatus

  • Priscacara Liops.

  • Lower Eocene Age - 50 million years ago.

  • Green River Formation, Wyoming.

Genus Priscacara is perhaps the most popular of the Green River fish fossils. A member of the Family Priscacaridae, the name Priscacara means "primitive head". Shaped rather like a sunfish, the genus sports sturdy, protective dorsal and anal spines. Among the two species, liops and serrata, serrata is uncommon. Liops is the smaller species, never exceeding 150 mm, whereas serrata have been found up to 375 mm.

Diplomystus' morphology, including its upturned mouth is prototypic of a surface feeding fish. The genus are herrings that likely fed on small surface dwelling fish as Knightia, is evidenced by numerous fossils found with Knightia is the stomach or mouth. The genus Diplomystus is also found to occur in Cretaceous strata in South America, as well as Cretaceous Lebanon.Included in this specimen is a naturally preserved Banana Leaf, making this museum quality specimen exceptionally more impressive.

We guarantee this specimen to be a 100% authentic fossil. A certificate of authenticity is included with your purchase. This beautiful specimen has wooden backing that allows for easy installation and hanging.
