Fossil Shark Teeth - Morocco

Sharks can shed many thousands of teeth throughout their lifetime. In order for these teeth to fossilize they must sink to the seafloor and quickly become covered by sediment. The shark fossil record is mostly composed of teeth because sharks, or chondrichthyans, are cartilaginous fishes. This means that most of their skeleton is composed of cartilage. Cartilage does not mineralize to the extent that bones does, and as a result breaks down much quicker and easier than bony elements. According to the fossil record, prehistoric shark teeth reached lengths of up to 7 inches long, and weights up to 1 pound. The sharks themselves grew as long as 60 feet! Our shark teeth come from Morocco. They are approximately 50 million years old.
